Emilio Barchiesi

Dr. Emilio Barchiesi is a researcher rtd-B in the scientific-disciplinary field ICAR/08 - Construction Science at the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning, University of Sassari since the academic year 2021/2022. He holds the courses of Statics, 3D printing technologies for design sciences, and Models and technologies of materials for design. He has held the course of Analysis of large infrastructures. He is a member of the Board of the Ph.D. course in Architecture and Environment at the University of Sassari and of the national Ph.D. in Defense Against Natural Risks and Ecological Transition of Built Environment at the University of Catania, established by a consortium of Italian universities.

He graduated in 2016 in Mathematical Engineering with the grade of 110/110 cum laude from the University of L'Aquila. In 2019, he received his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics cum laude from the University of Rome La Sapienza, discussing a thesis on the synthesis of on-demand micro-structured materials through an approach integrating asymptotic homogenization techniques, three-dimensional printing and experimental digital image correlation techniques.

He has done research as a postdoctoral fellow at the International Research Center for the Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems at the University of L'Aquila and the Institut de Recherche Dupuy de Lôme, École Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Brest. He was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow at the Université Bretagne Sud.

He is the author of more than 50 publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, more than 30 volume contributions in international publishing series, including 4 encyclopedic entries that appeared in the reference text Encyclopedia of Continuum Mechanics and 7 chapters of the book Discrete and Continuum Models for Complex Metamaterials published by Cambridge University Press. He is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies, groups and projects, including the Gruppo Nazionale per la Fisica Matematica (National Group for Mathematical Physics) of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica Francesco Severi, as well as of the editorial board of several international journals, including Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems, Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, and Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics. He is the editor of several collective volumes published in the series Advanced Structured Materials of the Spinger Nature publishing house. He regularly conducts scientific reviews for numerous international journals.

He has spent research periods in Germany (Technische Universität Berlin), France (École Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay), Russia (Tomsk State University of Architecture and Building), the United Kingdom (Newcastle University), Poland (Politechnika Warszawska) and the United States (Kansas University).

In 2018 and 2021 he was a winner of the Fellowship Forschungsstipendien awarded by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (Germany). In 2020, he received the Qualification aux fonctions de maitre de conférences from the French Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche in the section Mécanique, génie mécanique, génie civil and the Abilitazione Scientifca Nazionale to the functions of university professor of second rank in the concorsual sector 08/B2 - Construction Science. In 2022 he was lauréat du concours des chercheurs et chercheuses of the French Centre national de la recherche scientifique.

His research has received several grants from public and private entities. Since 2023, he has been national coordinator of the Project of Significant National Interest (PRIN) "Metamaterials design and synthesis with applications to infrastructure engineering" and responsible for the University of Sassari of the PRIN "A Fluid-Structure Interaction tool for the protection of clean energy production sites" funded by the Italian Ministry of University Education and Research.

He regularly serves as a speaker at international scientific conferences, including the Geomech workshop on Micromechanical behavior and scale transition in porous media and particulate systems held in Metz (France) in January 2019, the 29th International Workshop on Computational Mechanics of Materials held in Dubrovnik (Croatia) in September 2019, and the XI Congreso Internacional de Matemática Aplicada y Computacional held in Ñaña (Peru) in August 2023, in which he participated as a plenary speaker. He organized several conferences, including the International Conference on Nonlinear Solid Mechanics and the International Conference on Modelling Complexity in Mechanics in Alghero in June 2022 and September 2023, respectively.
