Sardinia can be reached from mainland Europe or Corsica by plane or ferry. There are three airports in Sardinia (Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero-Fertilia) and seven ferry ports (Cagliari, Olbia, Porto Torres, Golfo Aranci, Santa Teresa di Gallura and Arbatax, of which the first three are largest).
The Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning (DADU) at the University of Sassari is located in Alghero, a Sardinian city overlooking the northwestern coast of
Sardinia, known for its layered historic center, characterized by ancient city
walls and Catalan Gothic buildings.

CAGLIARI
Cagliari, in
southern Sardinia, is home to both a ferry port and an airport.
Cagliari-Elmas Airport “Mario Mameli” (IATA: CAG) is located about 6 km northwest of the city of Cagliari, in
southern Sardinia, along SS 130 in the direction of the town of Elmas to which
it belongs.

Whether you are
landing in Cagliari Elmas Airport or traveling from Cagliari city center,
getting to Alghero by car will take you around three hours. Follow SS 131
“Carlo Felice” & E25 northbound towards Sassari and once there take SS 291
“della Nurra” to Alghero.
Cagliari-Alghero by train
There are no
direct trains to Alghero. To get from Cagliari to Alghero you have to go via
Sassari. Trains to Sassari depart every two hours from both
Cagliari main train station located in Piazza Matteotti and from the train station located at Cagliari
Elmas Airport, which you can easily find by turning left and following the
signs “to the trains” outside of the baggage claim area in the arrivals
terminal.

Central Station: 6:30 am; 8:35 am; 10:40 am; 12:22 pm; 2:30 pm; 4:30 pm; 6:30
pm.
From Cagliari
Elmas Airport: 6:11 am; 6:20 am; 8:42 am; 10:46 am; 12:29 pm; 2:37 pm; 4:36 pm;
6:36 pm.
You can get
from Cagliari Central Train Station to Cagliari Elmas Airport by train in under
10 minutes. There are departures every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the time
of day. The overall ride from Cagliari to Sassari takes about 3 hours and 20
minutes.
Once you are in
Sassari, you will find a direct train to Alghero departing every hour starting
at 6:05 am and until 9:00 pm daily.
You will need
to buy two separate tickets: the first train is owned by the Italian Railways
(Ferrovie dello Stato) and costs about € 17,00; the second one is an ARST
regional service and costs between € 2,00 and € 4,00.
ALGHERO-FERTILIA
The
Alghero-Fertilia “Riviera del Corallo” airport (IATA: AHO), located in the southern part of the Nurra, is 10 km from the city
center of Alghero.

airport, Alghero can be reached by car, bus and taxi:

The offices are
located inside the terminal just outside the arrivals lounge. The parking areas
are in a reserved area, on the same side of the terminal. For more information

Take SP 44 to
Alghero, then turn left and take SS 291dir. Keep driving for about 15 minutes
and, at the first roundabout, take SP 42. Follow the road and you’ll find
yourself in the city center.
Alghero Airport-Alghero by bus
The only option
to travel between Alghero city center and Alghero Fertilia Airport by public
transportation is the bus service. Indeed, Alghero Airport is not served by
trains.
The ARST bus
stops are located about 150 meters (492 feet) from the Arrivals’ exit doors and
there is a bus leaving approximately every hour. The journey takes between 20
and 30 minutes, depending on the traffic. You can buy tickets on the automatic
vending machines inside the airport and at the bus stop, online on the ARST
website, and in some tobacco and lotto shops – there will be one inside the
airport terminal too. Tickets are € 1,00.
The last stop
is Via Catalogna in Alghero.

Alghero can
also be reached by bus, in an estimated time of about 1 hour, in fact Porto
Torres airport is the terminus of the ARST bus connections, the stop is located
in the commercial port area.
Alghero Airport-Alghero by taxi
This is the
most comfortable way to get to the city center. There isn’t any flat fee, but
you will be looking at a starting fee of € 25 during the day, which can vary
depending on the number of people traveling and on the amount of bags. There is
a 40% surcharge for night rides, between 12:00 am and 7:00 am.
The journey
takes around ten to twenty minutes depending on the traffic and your final
destination (hotel, harbor, center, etc.).
You will find
the taxis right outside the Arrivals’ exit doors. Like other taxis in Italy,
official taxis in Alghero are white and have a bright taxi sign on their roof.

PORTO TORRES
The nearest
passenger port to the city of Alghero is Porto Torres, located in northern
Sardinia 38 km from Alghero.

by car, once you leave the port area just follow the road signs to reach the
city center of Alghero, in an estimated time of about 30-35 minutes.
Porto Torres-Alghero by bus
Alghero can
also be reached by bus, in an estimated time of about 1 hour, in fact Porto
Torres port is the terminus of the ARST bus connections, the stop is located
in the commercial port area.
Porto Torres-Alghero by train
Trains stop a
short distance from the port. There is no direct connection Porto Torres-Alghero but Porto Torres-Sassari Centrale with
Trenitalia.
From Sassari
you can reach Alghero by train (Ferrovie della Sardegna line).
OLBIA
Olbia in
northeastern Sardinia has both a port and an airport.
Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (IATA: OLB) is located in northeastern Sardinia about 3 km from the city
center.

Olbia Airport-Alghero by train
Sardinia's rail
system consists of a main line that connects the northern port nodes, Olbia and
Porto Torres, with the capital in the south. The Ferrovie della Sardegna also
operates on the island, on tracks of poignant beauty that lead the gauge line
through forests, gorges and mountain passes.
From Olbia
Airport you can reach the train station via city bus routes No. 2 and No. 10.
The passenger
port is 136 km from the city of Alghero.
