Call for applications for a 15-month research grant “Modelli matematici per la progettazione e la sintesi di metamateriali con applicazioni all’ingegneria delle strutture” - deadline: December 6, 2023 at 24:00
The call for applications for the public comparative procedure, based on qualifications and interview, for the award of a 15-month research grant “Modelli matematici per la progettazione e la sintesi di metamateriali con applicazioni all’ingegneria delle strutture” (Mathematical models for metamaterials design and synthesis with applications to infrastructure engineering) at the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of the University of Sassari, has been published at this link.
The research grant, funded by the project PRIN2022BARCHIESI - Metamaterials design and synthesis with applications to infrastructure engineering, of which Prof. Emilio Barchiesi is the scientific head, pertains to the scientific area “08 - Ingegneria civile e Architettura”, macro-sector “08/B - Ingegneria strutturale e geotecnica”, settore concorsuale “08/B2 - Scienza delle costruzioni”, scientific-disciplinary fild “ICAR/08 - Scienza delle costruzioni”.
The candidate must have a solid background in computational mechanics, with particular reference to finite elements of beam, plate, membrane, shell and solid types. He/she must, also, possess solid skills in the use of computational software such as Matlab, COMSOL Multiphysics and Mathematica.
The research
activity will be aimed at:
- the
development and computation of discrete meso-mechanical models;
- the analysis
of the stiffness parameters used in such models to characterise the elastic
response of metamaterials in the regime of large deformations and, in general,
in cases where classical estimates are not applicable: these parameters will be
correlated to the constitutive parameters of the material constituting the beam
elements of the metamaterial under consideration, such as Young's and
tangential moduli, and to the geometric parameters of the beam cross-section,
such as the area, the shear correction factor and the moment of inertia;
- the
formulation, including through asymptotic homogenisation techniques, of
continuous theories aimed at describing for large displacements systems with
many discrete elements: in addition to being useful for unveiling so-called
emergent phenomena, continuous models will be exploited to identify stiffness
parameters;
- the study of problems where the effects of dynamics are non-negligible, such as those studied in passive vibration control.
More information regarding: admission requirements, application deadlines, examination schedule as well as contracting, duration and renewal can be found in the announcement and annex 1 (Competition schedule).

The description of the Ph.D. project associated to the position funded by Università degli Studi di Sassari
is the following one:
Among the most studied models in
mathematical physics, continuum mechanics models like beams, cables, plates,
membranes, shells, and solids are outstanding for their importance in
technological applications. Therefore, they have been extensively studied and
many discretizations have been proposed to allow their computation in the most
disparate contexts. However, available discretization schemes often present
some drawbacks when considering large deformation regimes. These drawbacks are
mainly related to the fact that they are formulated without keeping in mind the
mechanical phenomena for describing which the underlying continuum model has
been proposed. The project will aim at analyzing the deformation of complex
materials and structures in elastic large displacements and deformation
regimes, developing novel continuum models as well as corresponding
intrinsically discrete Lagrangian models based on the Hencky paradigm. The
proposed discrete models will be implemented numerically into step-wise
iterative solution schemes and applied to some relevant benchmark tests, as
well as compared with their continuum conteurpart solved by FEM. The final aim
is to employ the formulated models to perform structural analyses of non-linear
mechanical systems of engineering interest. Special emphasis will be put to
applications in the analysis of the structural response to static and dynamic
loading of innovative lattice-based materials.
