Fluid diffusion related aging effect in a concrete dam modeled as a Timoshenko beam
The article “Fluid diffusion related aging effect in a concrete dam modeled as a Timoshenko beam”
is now published in the journal Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems.
The article,
written by Angelo Scrofani, Emilio Barchiesi, Bernardino Chiaia, Anil Misra and
Luca Placidi, proposes a hemivariational method for an inhomogeneous damaged
Timoshenko beam model in order to describe the damage and deformation in a dam
caused by the diffusion of an aging fluid.
The proposed model is used to perform a series of parametric studies, in which the dam is subjected not only to the concentrated and distributed external forces and torques (duals of section displacement and rotation, respectively), but also to the dual of the aging fluid concentration, called the distributed external pressure of aging fluid inflow, which drives the inflow of aging fluid that is, for this purpose, coupled with the damage evolution. The results are used to predict the life time of the dam. The life of large structures is a crucial point in civil engineering because it is related to the preservation of human life.
